Perhaps the best news is that the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak of 2001 is now officially over. This means that all public footpaths are once more open for your enjoyment.

On a lighter note the A686 Trans-Pennine road from Haydon Bridge (on the A69, Northumberland) to Penrith in Cumbria, has been recognised as one of the top ten roads in the World by the Automobile Association Magazine. The A686 passes through Alston and our hotel and car park is on the side of the road at Townfoot, Alston. The A686 is a truly beautiful route through some wonderful countryside - from the rolling fields of the Tyne Valley up to the dramatic fells of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and down to the soft landscape of the Eden Valley.
