he Cumberland Hotel offers you a warm welcome deep in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Within easy reach of the Lake District National Park (on the A686 recently included in the AA Magazine's "The World's 10 Great Drives"), Northumberland National Park and Yorkshire Dales National Park. Newcastle, Carlisle, Penrith, Appleby, Keswick, Ambleside, Kendal, all are in easy reach driving through some of the best countryside in the World. Ullswater, probably the best of the lakes is only 30 minutes away - follow the road to get to Ambleside and Lake Windermere.

The Cumberland Hotel is in the ideal location to explore all that the North of England has to offer; from Alnwick Castle (where Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone was filmed and where Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone is being filmed), Hexham and the Roman Wall in Northumberland to Durham Cathedral in County Durham and the Eden Valley, Lake District and border regions of Cumbria. Newcastle's Quayside is an easy drive to the east. Don't forget Alston itself- a quaint old market town with delightful vernacular architecture and a cobbled main street. These qualities made Alston first choice as a star in Alan Bleasdale's recent television version of Dicken's Oliver Twist.

Our comfortable rooms all offer en-suite bathrooms, hairdryers, colour television and tea and coffee making facilities. We have five well appointed bedrooms comprising of three double rooms and two twins, three of these are classified as 'family rooms', with extra single beds.

We also have a nonsmoking lounge with television for the exclusive use of our guests. You can relax in the 'Lounge Bar' and admire the views of the fells and the magnificent sunsets. Below is the 'Cellar Bar' with access to the patio/beer garden and the quoits pitch. Both bars serve the best of real ales as well as wines, spirits and lagers.

Take one of our packed lunches with you when you walk the Pennine Way , cycle the C2C route, or explore the North Pennines. The River South Tyne, just to the rear of the Cumberland, offers good fishing for Salmon, Sea Trout and Wild Brown Trout. You are virtually guaranteed the river to your self! Alston Moor boasts the highest golf course in Britain. Nine holes on quite a slope - give it a try if you dare. Or hire a bike and use The Cumberland as a base for your cycling holiday.
