Ambleside

Windermere from Borrans Park
on the north shore

This boom in the tourist trade has of course led to many benefits: the town is undoubtedly more enjoyable to live in and visit, with many high quality shops and restaurants, plentiful accommodation to suit all pockets, a cinema and a great variety of shops and activities both on and off the Lake. The Lake incidentally has a regular ferry service running its length down to Lakeside, (with a steam railway and hotel to provide interest and sustenance), calling at Bowness on Windermere on the way.
